Tizta Berhanu
Tizta Berhanu (b. 1991, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) is a figurative painter whose evocative works explore the depths of human emotion through intimate and introspective compositions. She graduated in 2013 from the Addis Ababa University, Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, where she studied under renowned modernist painter Tadesse Mesfin. Berhanu has lived and worked in Addis Ababa her entire life, drawing inspiration from her cultural and social surroundings.

Her paintings are characterized by expressive, swirling brushstrokes and a dreamlike quality. Figures emerge from vibrant yet enigmatic backgrounds, their emotions rendered palpable through poignant gestures and features such as weighted eyelids, outstretched hands, and softly defined lips. These compositions convey a range of sentiments—from love and comfort to sadness and isolation—inviting viewers into moments of raw vulnerability and intimacy.

Berhanu’s masterful use of color plays a critical role in her storytelling. Lustrous reds evoke themes of love and passion, while oceanic blues immerse viewers in sensations of melancholy and solitude. The entangled forms within her work emphasize the collective nature of Ethiopian culture, underscoring the importance of community as a source of support and connection.

Through her dynamic and emotionally resonant art, Tizta Berhanu continues to contribute a compelling voice to contemporary Ethiopian painting.
