Phoebe Boswell explores the transitional space between shared histories and imagined futures, focusing on how we perceive ourselves and each other, and how these perceptions shape our understanding of freedom. Her figurative, interdisciplinary practice is informed by a diasporic perspective, allowing her to fluidly navigate various media, including drawing, painting, film, video, sound, and writing. Through these forms, she creates immersive installations that interact with and respond to their environments, influenced by time, collective consciousness, layered soundscapes, spontaneous loops, and the audience’s presence. Often involving volunteers in the creative process to establish a rich, collective voice, Boswell’s work delves into themes such as protest, reclamation, grief, intimacy, migration, and the body’s capacity to shape worlds. Her recent pieces explore the dual nature of bodies of water, viewing them as both repositories of historical trauma and as spaces for renewal and hope.
