Pekiwa

Nelson Augusto Carlos Ferreira, known artistically as PEKIWA, was born on January 30, 1977, in Maputo and has been sculpting since childhood, initially working with the sculptor Govane, his father.

In recent years, he has focused on researching elements with historical significance related to the past, seeking out woods and sculptural materials, traveling through much of the country, but with a particular focus on materials from the Island of Mozambique, which he visits frequently.Pekiwa says he is captivated by the Island, a place of inspiration and an inexhaustible source of stories about life and the world.
He works with materials found in local neighborhoods, such as old doors and traditional household utensils, which he transforms into works of art. The materials collected and transformed carry semantic elements of culture, anthropology, and social significance. While still very young, he participated in various national and international workshops and began exhibiting his works in 1997.

Since then, he has held numerous group and solo exhibitions in Mozambique and abroad. His work is represented in private collections and public and private institutions in Mozambique, Portugal, South Africa, Botswana, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Senegal, Spain, the Netherlands, the USA, England, Japan, Italy, Australia, and other countries
