Elias Mung’ora

Elias Mung’ora (b. 1992, Nyeri, Kenya) is a Nairobi-based artist whose work provides a layered exploration of urban life and its intersections with history and identity. Originally pursuing a degree in Real Estate and Property Management, Mung’ora chose to leave academia to fully immerse himself in the visual arts, a decision that has profoundly shaped his creative journey.

Mung’ora draws inspiration from the vibrant and complex urban spaces of Nairobi. Through painting, drawing, photography, and woodcut prints, he captures the rhythms of city life, documenting significant moments such as weddings and intimate portrait sessions. His work delves into the layered histories of these spaces, juxtaposing traces of past lives with the physical and social imbalances of urban environments. By doing so, he highlights how these disparities impact the city’s inhabitants.

His richly textured canvases often blend historical imagery with sweeping brushstrokes that symbolize renewal and intricate depictions of everyday moments. This interplay of history, space, and human experience forms the foundation of his artistic practice, offering a poignant commentary on the evolving urban landscape.

Mung’ora is a member of the Brush-Tu Artist Collective, a group that fosters contemporary art in Nairobi. His work has garnered significant recognition: he was a top 10 finalist in the 2017 Barclays L’Atelier competition and won the Manjano Art Competition in 2016.
