Agnes Waruguru was born in 1994 in Nairobi, Kenya, where she currently lives and works. She is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, printmaking, needlework, and installation. Her work delves into the materiality of objects and spaces, intertwining personal identity politics with references to women’s practices and traditional cultural motifs. Often abstract in appearance, her art emerges from a blend of memory, place, and emotion, crafting evocative “memoryscapes” and “emotionscapes” that invite viewers to engage slowly, imagining and exploring their poetic dimensions.
Waruguru earned her BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in the United States. Her work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, including the inaugural Stellenbosch Triennale in South Africa (2020). She was a nominee for the Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs in 2022, held at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, and has been invited to participate in the prestigious 60th International Art Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia.
An active participant in artist residencies, Waruguru has worked in Kenya, Australia, and the Netherlands, most recently completing her residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.
