Julius Agbaje is a Lagos based artist from Edo state, Nigeria. He is a graduate of Painting from the distinguished Yaba College of Technology. Originally a computer engineering undergraduate, he went on to pursue a career in Visual Art in a bid to engage his community more directly. In 2017, He won the Omooba Yemisi Shyllon Art Foundation (OYASAF) Residency Award for Best graduating Art Students and has since participated in and won both Regional and National Art competitions.
Julius’ works have been exhibited both locally and internationally. Afriuture (2018, Canada), 1st Nigerian Cultural Day (2019, Germany), Next of Kin II (2019, Lagos), Pride (London), Oreze VI (2017, Onitsha) and so on. Often referred to as a social satirist, his artworks border around issues affecting women, religion, politics and society at large. He uses his art to interrogate and reinforce often neglected or diluted societal ills. In execution, he explores diverse medium, namely acrylic, charcoal, watercolours, oil colour, pastel and recently, vestiges of burnt tyres.
He sees himself as a storyteller and his canvas or other ground his narrative space, therefore avoids careful planning and pre-sketches which he believes can dilute the unpredictability and richness of his thought process.
