Dennis Muraguri (b. 1980, Naivasha, Kenya) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Nairobi, Kenya. He explores themes of urban culture, transportation, and contemporary African identity through various mediums, including printmaking, sculpture, video, and installation.
A graduate of the Buruburu Institute of Fine Art with a Diploma in Painting and Art History (2003), Muraguri has been an artist-in-residence at the Kuona Artists’ Collective since 2007. His work is particularly recognized for its vivid portrayal of matatus—Kenya’s privately owned minibuses that serve as the backbone of public transportation. Through intricate woodcut prints and mixed-media pieces, Muraguri captures the energy, aesthetics, and sociopolitical narratives embedded in matatu culture, incorporating influences from graffiti, music, and global pop culture.
By weaving together textual and visual cues drawn from music, film, television, and street art, Muraguri documents a uniquely Kenyan urban phenomenon while situating it within a broader contemporary dialogue.
