Shabu Mwangi (b. 1985, Nairobi, Kenya) is an artist and activist who lives and works in the Mukuru slum, where he founded the Wajukuu Art Project in 2013. This initiative highlights his dedication to using art as a tool to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and address societal injustices. Mwangi’s work critically examines the erosion of empathy and the divisions that arise from social, political, ethnic, and religious differences.
Inspired by the inequities and challenges within his society, Mwangi’s art exposes how politically charged moments can exacerbate cultural and social rifts. His work investigates the forces that shape identity and behavior, offering deep insights into what divides or unites communities.
Through his practice, Mwangi explores themes of human interaction and questions the prioritization of ego over collective unity. His pieces invite viewers to reflect on shared humanity and consider the barriers that fracture societies. Mwangi’s art transforms personal experience into a narrative of advocacy and connection, creating a powerful platform for dialogue and change.
